"Artificial Intelligence for Smart Supply Chain"

Introduction

Although supply chains have exerted strong innovations on the global industry over the last two decades, current corporate supply chain undergoes swift changes and rapid innovations by digital transformation and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. These innovations are mainly based on the advanced analytics of big data and intelligent decision making for supply chains, where huge amount of data is generated from raw material procurement, production, distribution, and sales. Through advanced analytics based on AI technology, the collected big data is transformed into valuable information that has been difficult to obtain before. Applying this information into supply chain design, planning and execution, we can manage the supply chain in an intelligent manner. Furthermore, with continuous and steady learning processes, the algorithms for intelligence decision making are increasingly improved, so that the traditional supply chain is evolving to the smart supply chain which involves minimal human intervention and autonomous operations. These smart supply chains will dramatically improve operational and financial performance, and provide new opportunities to maximize customer satisfaction and competitive advantages to companies. This special issue expects innovative works and surveys to explore and introduce new trends, case studies, and challenges in the field of AI and digital transformation for smart supply chain including theories, new techniques and processes, implementation issues, real-world deployments, and new applications. Possible topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Spend analytics and spend pooling using cost modelling to identify cost drivers
  • Automatic analysis of contract compliance
  • Advanced analytics for forecasting and demand planning
  • Smart supply chain planning with scenario-based real-time closed-loop planning capabilities
  • Advanced process control and quality testing with self-optimizing processing parameters and tolerance optimization capabilities
  • Advanced inventory management using out-of-stock detection and sensor-driven replenishment
  • Smart manufacturing using human-machine collaboration, collaborative and context-aware robots with image and voice recognition capabilities, and new production technologies like additive manufacturing
  • Advanced analytics for warehouse management including picking zone and space allocation, automatic stock relocation in storage areas, optimal picking and slotting, and workload optimization
  • Smart logistics planning and operations using dynamic re-routing and scheduling, autonomous material handling, autonomous vehicles with self-learning and self-navigating capabilities
  • Advanced analytics for channel/store allocation of goods and shelf space optimization
  • Advanced profit optimization using micro-segmentation and credit rating to define payment terms offered including fraud detection
  • Product recommendations based on purchase history
  • Prescriptive merchandizing using on-line AI-powered sales associates
  • Block-chain applications for trust and automated operations and payment
  • Enhanced connectivity and visibility using IoT, cloud service, and platforms for collaboration among suppliers and customers
  • Advanced analytics for supply chain design including dynamic network configuration, transport and route optimization
  • Predictive diagnostics and automated root-cause analysis
  • Predictive maintenance and spare parts management
  • Digital performance management using cyber-physical systems like digital twins

Important dates

  • Deadline of full paper submissions: 30 November 2021
  • Final decision due: before 28 February 2022
  • Tentative publication date: 31 March 2022
